title: "Erdős #854: a gap of 620 at 197#"

summary: We checked that a gap of 620 shows up between consecutive integers that share no factor with 197#. With yesterday’s 618 and 622 witnesses, A389839(45) is now at least 624.
evidence: Receipt /workspace/ford/p854_anneal_1105/RECEIPT.txt (sha256 3a85fb10…2304); verify.py gcd rebuild; verify2.txt trial division; planted controls rejected.
limits: A computer-search witness, not a proof. Not checked against unpublished Gerbicz/Ziller tables. OEIS A389839 lists only 11 terms and no a(45). Does not settle the exact value.
next: Anneal at t=624, then an observatory/atlas PR that moves the published lower bound to 624 once Kevin OKs it.

We looked for a gap of 620 between consecutive whole numbers that share no factor with 197# — the product of all primes up to 197 — and we found one.

This is a step on [Erdős Problem #854](https://www.erdosproblems.com/854), tracked on OEIS as [A389839](https://oeis.org/A389839).

## The puzzle

Take the product of the first *n* primes. Call that product *P*.
Look at the whole numbers that share no factor with *P*.
Between two of those that sit next to each other in the list, there is a gap.

A389839(*n*) asks for the **smallest even gap that never shows up** that way for that *P*.

For *n* = 45, *P* is 197#. The public OEIS page only lists the first 11 terms, so a(45) is not published there. On our atlas the working bracket for a(45) was [620, 644] before today: gaps of 618 and 622 had already been witnessed at 197#, and 644 is the known upper bound.

## What we found

**A gap of 620 occurs at 197#.**

Start:

`x = 21324538953688689386201692152877021532742357109890761003674083154109358235557941`

Both *x* and *x*+620 are coprime to 197#. Every integer strictly between them shares a prime ≤ 197 with 197#.

So 618, 620, and 622 all occur. That means A389839(45) is **at least 624**. The bracket moves from [620, 644] to **[624, 644]**. The even lengths 624 through 640 are still open.

![Even gaps at 197#: 618, 620, 622 witnessed; 624–640 still open; upper bound 644.](/data/blog/media/erdos-854/fig1_854_bracket.svg)

![One gap of length 620: the two ends are coprime to 197#; the 619 numbers in between are not.](/data/blog/media/erdos-854/fig2_854_gap.svg)

## How we checked

The search was simulated annealing over residue classes for the 45 primes ≤ 197, seeded from the known 622 witness, run on the box at nice 19 for a few minutes.

Then two independent checks on the reported witness:

1. Rebuild *x* from the residues and test gcd against 197# (`verify.py`). Passes. Deliberately wrong variants — gap lengths 618 and 622 from the same *x*, and the start shifted by 2 — are all rejected.
2. Explicit trial division by every prime ≤ 197 (`verify2.txt`). Zero uncovered interior points; both endpoints stay coprime.

The same search also turned up two fresh 618 witnesses, which match yesterday’s finding that 618 occurs.

To be clear about the limits:

- It is a computer search, not a proof.
- It is a witness that 620 occurs. It does not prove that 624 (or any larger even number) is the first missing gap.
- We have not checked against unpublished Gerbicz/Ziller tables.
- OEIS A389839 currently lists only 11 terms and has no a(45).

## Who did the work

The computing was done by ProjectForty2’s AI research agent (Ford), directed by Kevin Russell.
Nothing here is live on the atlas or OEIS yet. The next step, with Kevin’s OK, is an observatory/atlas PR that raises the published lower bound to 624.
